Calgary Home Fall Maintenance Checklist (2026)

Calgary's first hard frost arrives earlier than most homeowners expect — often in mid-September. This checklist covers everything worth doing before it arrives, with notes on what's a DIY task and what's worth calling a handyman for.

Why fall prep matters more in Calgary than most cities

Calgary's climate is unusually demanding on homes. You have dry summers with UV damage, then sudden cold snaps, then Chinook warming events that thaw and refreeze everything within 48 hours. That freeze-thaw cycle is what causes caulk to crack, weatherstripping to compress, drain pipes to heave and deck boards to split.

The window to do meaningful fall maintenance is roughly August through early October — before night temperatures are consistently below +10°C, when caulk and sealants still cure properly.

Exterior checklist

Caulking and weatherproofing

  • Walk the full perimeter and look for caulk pulling away from window and door frames
  • Check all exterior siding-to-trim joints — especially on the south and west faces (most UV exposure)
  • Look for gaps at pipe and vent penetrations through the wall
  • Check the foundation-to-siding transition along the bottom course of siding

DIY or handyman? Simple caulk touch-ups with a tube of exterior caulk are DIY. Removing old caulk fully, re-caulking multiple windows and doors, and choosing the right product for each location is faster and better with a handyman.

Entry and patio doors

  • Check weatherstripping on all exterior doors — press the foam flat and see if it springs back
  • Close each door and look for visible light gaps around the frame
  • Test the door bottom seal — slide paper under the closed door; if it slides easily, the seal is worn
  • Lubricate hinges and deadbolt mechanisms before cold weather makes them stiff

Deck and fence

  • Walk the deck and press each board — soft spots mean rot underneath
  • Test every railing section — grab and push; loose posts become safety issues after freeze-thaw
  • Open and close the gate — sagging gates get worse over winter
  • Clear debris from deck gaps — trapped moisture accelerates board decay

Exterior vents

  • Check the dryer vent cap — flap should open freely and snap closed
  • Check bathroom and HRV exhaust vents — cracked or missing caps let cold air and pests in
  • Inspect soffit vents for wasp nests — seal after removing (use a licensed pest company if needed)

Interior checklist

Dryer vent

  • Check drying time — if clothes take longer than 45–50 minutes, the vent needs cleaning
  • Pull the dryer out and inspect the flexible hose — look for kinks, holes or plastic hose (replace immediately)
  • Book annual dryer vent cleaning if not done in the last 12 months

Bathroom caulking

  • Check tub and shower caulk — black mold or visible gaps mean it's time to replace
  • Check around the base of the toilet
  • Check under the vanity where the countertop meets the wall

Smoke and CO detectors

  • Test every detector — press and hold the test button
  • Replace batteries in any that chirp
  • Replace detectors older than 10 years (smoke) or 5–7 years (CO)
  • Add a CO detector near gas appliances if you don't have one

Furnace filter

  • Check the furnace filter before heating season starts — a clogged filter makes the furnace work harder
  • Replace if grey or dusty — most Calgary homes need a 1" filter changed every 1–3 months during heating season

Outdoor prep

  • Shut off and drain exterior hose bibs before first frost — this is one of the most commonly forgotten steps
  • Drain and store garden hoses
  • Store or cover patio furniture before the first snowfall
  • Clear garden beds of dead annuals and compost
  • Cut back perennials to 5–10cm or leave seed heads for birds if preferred
  • Add a layer of mulch over perennial beds before hard frost to protect roots

The fall handyman visit

The most efficient way to knock out fall prep is to book a multi-task handyman visit in August or September. A single visit can typically cover:

  • Caulking inspection and touch-up (exterior windows and doors)
  • Weatherstripping replacement where worn
  • Dryer vent cleaning
  • Deck and fence quick inspection and minor fixes

Combining these into one visit is more cost-effective than separate trips and ensures everything is done before Calgary temperatures drop below the safe caulking threshold (+5°C).
