Why Calgary is hard on decks and fences
Alberta's climate puts wood through more stress cycles per year than most parts of Canada. Spring thaw, summer UV exposure, hail impact, autumn moisture and deep freeze in winter all accelerate wood decay and hardware failure. A pressure-treated deck board that looks solid in the spring might be splitting and soft by fall — especially if water has been sitting in any fastener holes.
Calgary also has some of the highest average hail frequency in Canada. A single storm can crack fence boards, dent metal post caps and drive moisture into exposed wood grain. Most hail damage to fences and decks is repairable without replacing entire structures — but it needs to be addressed before the next wet season.
Small deck and fence repairs done in spring or fall are almost always cheaper than waiting. One loose rail post that isn't re-secured becomes three rotted boards and a leaning fence section by the following year.
