Why Calgary doors stick, sag and misalign

Calgary's extreme temperature swings — from -30°C in January to +30°C in July — cause door frames and the wood around them to expand and contract constantly. A door that latched perfectly in spring may drag on the floor by August or refuse to close in February. This isn't a defective door; it's a normal response to Alberta's climate and it's completely fixable.

In newer homes, framing settles for the first few years and doors shift with it. In older homes, hinges loosen, strike plates drift and door stops compress. The fix is almost never a new door — it's a proper assessment and adjustment by someone who knows what to look for.

Door problems we fix most often

Sticking doors

Seasonal wood expansion, settled framing or loose hinges. We find the binding point and fix it — planning the edge, shimming hinges or adjusting the stop strip.

Door won't latch

The strike plate has drifted out of alignment. Usually a quick relocation or strike plate swap. If the door itself has dropped, hinge work fixes the root cause.

Worn or broken hardware

Old handles, loose deadbolts, bent hinges and stripped screws. We replace hardware correctly so it operates smoothly and holds securely.

How a door repair visit works

1

Diagnose the cause

We check the door, frame, hinges, strike plate and floor clearance — because the visible symptom (sticking) often has an invisible cause (hinge drop).

2

Fix the root cause

Hinge shimming, planing, strike plate adjustment, hardware swap — whichever combination solves the issue, confirmed with you before work starts.

3

Test and confirm

The door is tested through its full range — open, close, latch, lock — before we pack up. No guessing whether it worked.

Common reasons people book this service

  • Interior door drags on carpet or hardwood after flooring install
  • Entry door sticks in summer heat — hard to open or close
  • Bedroom or bathroom door no longer latches properly
  • Lock was changed by a previous tenant — needs a deadbolt swap
  • Upgrading to a keypad or app-controlled smart lock
  • Bathroom privacy lock broken — needs a quick knob replacement
  • New home settling — doors that were fine a year ago now stick
  • Rental turnover — replacing worn handles and re-keying deadbolts

Door & lock FAQ

Why does my door only stick in summer?

Wood swells in humidity. Calgary summers are drier than eastern Canada, but a week of warm humid weather is enough to expand a door by a few millimetres. Proper adjustment gives the door the clearance it needs to close year-round.

Can you install a smart lock?

Yes. Most battery-powered smart locks replace an existing deadbolt directly — no wiring, no electrician needed. Bring your lock to the appointment and we'll install and test it. See our smart lock installation page for details.

My door looks fine but won't latch. Why?

The strike plate is probably misaligned by a few millimetres — common in homes that have settled or had flooring work done nearby. It's usually a 20-minute fix once we confirm the cause.

Do you install full exterior doors?

We handle pre-hung interior doors and straightforward exterior door hardware swaps. Full exterior door installs that involve framing, insulation or weatherproofing changes are better scoped with a broader assessment first — contact us and we'll advise.

Can you fix a sliding patio door?

Yes for most sliding door issues — dirty or bent tracks, worn rollers and latches that don't catch. Broken glass panels or damaged frames require a door specialist.

Do you re-key locks?

Re-keying requires a licensed locksmith. We replace deadbolts and handles entirely, which is often the faster and more reliable solution when moving into a new home.

Ready to fix that door?

Not satisfied with the work? I will come back and make it right.
