Why more Calgary homeowners are switching to smart locks

Smart locks have come a long way in the last few years. The battery-powered keypad and app-controlled deadbolts available today from Schlage, Kwikset, Yale and August are significantly more reliable than early models — and they install in the same space as a standard deadbolt, with no new wiring, no electrician and no structural changes to the door.

The most common use cases in Calgary are practical ones: Airbnb and rental properties where key handoffs are inconvenient, families who want kids to be able to get inside without a key, homeowners who've lost a key and want to avoid re-keying, and households that want a code for regular visitors (cleaners, dog walkers, family) without duplicating physical keys.

The most common install problem is a door that's slightly out of alignment — the deadbolt throw doesn't retract fully, the lock motor strains and the battery drains fast. We check door alignment before and during install to make sure the smart lock operates correctly, not just installs physically.

What we handle

  • Keypad deadbolt installation (Schlage Encode, Kwikset Halo, Yale Assure, August and similar)
  • App-controlled and Bluetooth smart lock installation
  • Wi-Fi enabled smart lock installation (Z-Wave, Zigbee, built-in Wi-Fi)
  • Replacement of existing deadbolt with new smart lock
  • Door alignment check and strike plate adjustment before install
  • Battery installation and initial pairing setup
  • Smart lock removal and revert to standard deadbolt
  • Smart lock swaps between units (Airbnb / rental between-guest hardware changes)

What to know before ordering your lock

  • Most standard doors take a 60mm (2-3/8") or 70mm (2-3/4") backset — measure yours first
  • Your door needs a single pre-drilled hole for a standard deadbolt (most doors do)
  • Battery-powered models need no wiring — just fresh AA batteries
  • Wi-Fi models need a nearby router — Bluetooth-only models work without internet
  • Schlage B series and Kwikset 900 series are among the most reliable in cold climates

Smart lock types we install

Keypad deadbolts

No phone needed — just a code. Best for rentals, families and anyone who finds phone-dependent locks unreliable. Schlage Encode and Kwikset Halo are the most popular.

App + keypad combo

Control remotely, set time-limited codes for guests, and lock/unlock from anywhere with Wi-Fi. Yale Assure and August Smart Lock are common choices.

Bluetooth-only locks

Simpler, longer battery life, no hub required. Unlocks automatically as you approach. Good for primary residence use where remote access isn't a priority.

How a smart lock install works

1

Check door and alignment

We test the existing deadbolt throw, check door-to-frame clearance and adjust the strike plate if needed before installing — a misaligned door will kill smart lock batteries fast.

2

Install and configure

Old deadbolt removed, new lock installed, batteries loaded and initial pairing completed. For app-based locks, we walk through the download and initial setup with you.

3

Test and hand off

Lock and unlock from outside using the code, inside using the thumb-turn, and via app if applicable. Confirmed working before we leave.

Common reasons people book smart lock installation

  • Airbnb or short-term rental — eliminate key handoffs entirely
  • New home purchase — replacing locks without re-keying
  • Kids arriving home before parents — keypad code instead of a physical key
  • Dog walker, house cleaner or contractor access — temporary codes
  • Lost key — upgrade to keypad rather than re-keying the whole house
  • Garage suite or basement suite — separate access without sharing keys
  • Moving out of a rental — reverting back to a standard deadbolt cleanly

Smart lock installation FAQ

Do I need an electrician for a smart lock?

No. Battery-powered smart locks replace your existing deadbolt with no new wiring. The only power source is the included batteries (usually 4 AA batteries). We handle the full installation.

Will a smart lock work in Calgary's cold winters?

Yes, with the right product. Locks rated for outdoor use are designed for -30°C operation. Schlage and Kwikset products rated for exterior use perform reliably in Alberta winters. Cheaper Amazon brands sometimes fail in the cold — we can advise on product selection before you order.

Which smart locks do you recommend?

For Calgary conditions and reliability: Schlage Encode Plus (keypad + HomeKit), Kwikset Halo (Wi-Fi keypad), Yale Assure Lock 2 (app + keypad). For simplicity without an app: Schlage B60N re-keyed keypad. We're brand-agnostic — we'll install whatever you choose.

Can you remove a smart lock and put back a regular deadbolt?

Yes. Reverting to a standard deadbolt is a 20-minute job included in the same visit. Common when moving out of a rental or selling a property.

Does this work on condo or apartment doors?

Usually yes for the unit door. Check with building management first — some buildings restrict exterior lock changes or have specific approved products. Interior smart locks on unit doors are generally permitted.

Can you help set up the app and codes?

We handle physical installation and basic pairing. We'll walk you through the app download and initial code setup. For complex smart home integrations (Google Home, Apple HomeKit, Alexa automations), that's usually a DIY configuration step after the install.
