Calgary and hail: what homeowners need to know

Calgary sits in one of Canada's most active hail corridors. The city averages more large-hail days per year than almost anywhere else in the country, and the damage from a single storm can range from cosmetic dings on siding to cracked soffit panels, bent fascia and exposed wood trim that now has no weather protection.

Roofers are overwhelmed after major storms — waits of 2–6 weeks are common. But the small visible damage lower on your home (siding below the roofline, soffit along the eaves, fascia boards and exterior trim) doesn't need a roofer. It needs someone who can get there quickly, confirm what needs replacing and do the work before the next rain gets into the exposed area.

That's what this service covers. We're not roofers. But for everything from the wall down — siding panels, soffit, fascia, vents and exterior trim — we can usually respond within days of a storm and have repairs done before the moisture damage starts.

What a handyman handles vs. what needs a specialist

✓ Handyman scope

Siding panels below the roofline, soffit and fascia repairs accessible from ground level or a standard ladder, exterior trim, vent caps, caulking and visible wood exposure protection.

✗ Requires a roofer

Shingle replacement, flashing, roof membrane, gutters above a single-storey roofline and any work that requires walking on the roof surface. We'll tell you clearly if the scope requires a licensed roofer.

✗ Requires an insurer

Widespread damage across the full exterior may qualify for an insurance claim. We provide clear written scope notes you can share with your adjuster.

How a storm repair visit works

1

Assessment and photos

We walk the exterior, photograph all visible damage and confirm what's within handyman scope and what may need a specialist. A written scope summary is provided before work starts.

2

Secure and repair

Damaged panels and trim are removed cleanly and replaced with matching material where available. Exposed areas are sealed to prevent water intrusion before full repairs are done.

3

Document and follow up

Completed work is photographed and noted. If insurance documentation is needed, we provide a clear scope summary. Any items outside scope are flagged for the right trade.

Common storm damage scenarios we handle

  • Cracked or displaced vinyl siding after a hailstorm
  • Soffit panel blown out by wind in a Chinook or thunderstorm
  • Fascia board cracked by large hailstone impact
  • Dryer or bathroom vent cap shattered — needs fast replacement to keep pests out
  • Window trim caulking cracked open — sealing before the next rain
  • Wood trim sections showing bare wood after paint failure from impact
  • Garage trim loose or hanging after storm wind

Hail & storm damage FAQ

Can you repair full-home siding damage?

We handle partial repairs — individual panels and sections. Full siding replacement across an entire home is a larger project better suited to a siding contractor. We're honest about scope: if we see the damage and it's beyond a repair, we'll tell you.

How quickly can you respond after a storm?

We prioritize storm damage requests. Send photos as soon as it's safe after the storm and we aim to respond within one business day. Urgent exposed areas (missing vent caps, open wood) are given priority scheduling.

Will insurance cover the repairs?

That depends on your policy and the storm event. We don't deal directly with insurers, but we provide a written scope summary and before/after photos that your adjuster can use to process your claim.

Can you match existing siding colour and profile?

We do our best to source matching material. For older homes, an exact colour match may not be available — slight variations between old and new panels are normal and visible up close. We'll advise before ordering material.

What if the damage turns out to be more structural?

If we arrive and find damage that's beyond handyman scope — wall sheathing exposed, structural trim members damaged, or widespread roof involvement — we'll document what we find and refer you to the appropriate trade. We don't start work outside our scope.
