Drywall Repair: DIY or Hire a Handyman?

Small nail holes are easy to fix yourself. Larger damage, water stains, failed tape and texture matching are where most homeowners lose time and money trying to DIY.

What you can realistically fix yourself

With a tube of spackling, a putty knife and some sandpaper, most homeowners can handle:

  • Nail holes and small anchor holes (under 1 inch)
  • Shallow surface scuffs and dents
  • Hairline cracks that have not moved

The catch: paint matching. Even after a clean patch, re-painting just the repair spot rarely blends perfectly. If the wall has aged paint or a texture, the patch will show. Factor in repainting the whole wall if you want an invisible result.

When to hire a handyman

The difficulty increases sharply once the damage goes beyond a simple fill:

  • Holes 2 inches and larger — require a mesh patch or a cut-and-replace section with a backing board. The joint compound needs multiple coats and sanding between each. Most DIY repairs in this category end up visibly lumpy.
  • Failed drywall tape — bubbling or peeling tape along seams or corners needs to be fully removed, re-bedded and feathered out. This is a messy, multi-step job.
  • Popped screws — driving a new screw and patching is quick, but there are often many of them, and they keep popping if the underlying framing is moving.
  • Texture matching — orange peel, knockdown and skip-trowel textures each require specific tools and technique. A smooth patch in a textured wall stands out immediately.
  • Water damage — once the leak source is fixed, the damaged drywall needs to be cut out and replaced. Attempting to patch over water-damaged drywall traps moisture and leads to mould.

What a drywall repair costs in Calgary

A handyman in Calgary typically charges from $95 for a small patch and from $145 for larger repairs with texture matching. The final price depends on the number of holes, the wall texture and whether painting is included.

Photo-based quotes are standard for straightforward jobs — send a wide shot of the wall and a close-up of the damage. Most handymen can quote accurately without a site visit.

The real cost of a bad DIY patch

A visible drywall repair in a main room affects your home's presentation — whether you are selling, renting or just living there. A $40 DIY patch that requires a handyman to redo properly costs more in the end than booking the job correctly the first time.
